About Banda

Banda is the district Headquarters of Banda district in Uttar Pradesh located in the Bundelkhand region. The city lies on the right banks of River Ken. The city is sited at a distance of 197 km away from the state capital Lucknow and 575 km away from the national capital Delhi. People of all religions and communities reside in Banda out of which the majority of population belongs to Chandelas, Bundelas, Chandrauls, Patels and Kshatriyas communities. The locals in the city speak Hindi, Urdu and Bundeli. The language Bundeli is a common language used among the people in Bundelkhand region which is 70 to 90 % similar to Hindi language.

The Banda royal family is very popular in Uttar Pradesh as they are one of the highest jagirdars in their period. The current heir of the Banda royal family is Smt. Amita Bajpai. Goswami Tulsidas is one of the popular personalities born in Banda. He authored the Ramcharitmanas. 

History of Banda

Banda is a historic and an ancient town in Uttar Pradesh which was ruled by different rulers in different time slots like the Chedi kingdom before 16th century, Chandel Rajputs after 16th Century and finally by the British East India Company in 1802. During the time of British the city was under Allahabad division and was a military cantonment town. The residents of the city faced rough patches during British rule due to heavy tax and many joined Indian rebellion to protect against British rule in their region.  Banda was recovered by British General Whitlock in 1858.  

Geography of Banda

Banda city is elevated at a height of 123 meters above sea level which is about 404 feet and it has its coordinates at 25° 29' North latitude and 80° 20' East longitude. Banda is surrounded by Badokhar Khurd Tehsil in the South, Mahuva Tehsil in the South, Tindwari Tehsil in the East and Bisanda Tehsil in the East. 

River Ken flows very close to the western boundary of the city. The city also homes numerous small water bodies and ponds in its various localities like Chhabi Talab, Diggi Talab, Nawab Tank and many more. The city has uneven highlands in its ground surface. Summers are very hot and winters are cool in the city.

The popular areas and localities in the city are the Ladaka, Sarvodaya Nagar, Khinpar, Hardauli, Civil Lines, Kyotara, Tulsi Nagar, Indira Nagar, Jyothi Nagar, Bangalipura, Katra Banda, Gularnaka, Balkhandi Naka, Chhoti Bazar, Aliganj, Shastri Nagar, Gayatri Nagar, Ladaka Purwa and Kalu Kuwana. 

The Bangalipura locality is located in the center of the city and it forms the meeting point of all major highways running within the city like the NH 232, NH 76, UP SH 92 and UP SH 13. The Gularnaka locality is a very important locality in Banda sited adjacent to Bangalipura locality. The locality homes the Banda railway junction, Diggi Talab, Sabzi mandi, Nagar Park, Jama Masjid and many other popular commercial establishments. 

The Sarvodaya Nagar locality forms the top end of the city and the NH 232 enters Banda through this locality. The Ladaka Purwa locality forms the eastern end of Banda and it is very popular for Sigh Nath Mandhir.
The Civil Lines locality is another important and most visited locality of Banda as it homes the District Magistrate Office, District hospital and the district stadium in its grounds. The NH 232 runs in the center of the Civil Lines locality.

The Chhoti Bazar locality homes the Kotwali police station, Maheshwari Devi Temple and the Chhoti Bazar police station. The Shastri Nagar locality forms the bottom end of Banda and it is very popular for its two talabs. The NH 76 runs through Shastri nagar locality. The Aliganj locality homes the Babulal Chauraha bus station and a major hospital.

Demography of Banda

The city recorded a total population of 154388 put of which male constitutes 82215 and female constitutes 72173 as per 2011 population census. The population growth in the city is increased by + 1.37 % per year from the last census year of 2001. The total number of children in the city between 0 to 6 years of age are 17697 out of which boys constitute 9351 and girls constitute 8346. The child population contributes nearly 11.46 % of the total city population. The city homes more than twenty nine thousand families within its boundary. 

The sex ratio in the city is recorded as 878 female out of 1000 male. The child sex ratio in the city is recorded as 893 girls out of 1000 girls. Both the female and child sex ratios in Banda is less than the average Uttar Pradesh state sex ratios of 912 and 902 respectively. Out of the total city population nearly 19198 people belongs to Schedule caste and about 22 people belongs to Schedule Tribe.

The average literacy rate in Banda is recorded as 83. 30 % i.e. 113857 which is very much higher than the average Uttar Pradesh state literacy rate of 67.68 %. The male literacy rate in the city is recorded as 64871 i.e. 89.03 % and the female literacy rate is recorded as 48986 i.e. 76.75 %.

The total number of people employed in the city is recorded as 48690 out of which male constitutes 41132 and female constitutes 7558. Out of the total working population nearly 40492 are engaged in regular work and the rest of 8198 belongs to marginal work. 

Administration in Banda

Banda is the administrative capital of Banda district for the reason why the city homes many vital government agencies in its grounds like the DM office, Banda district court, police station and many more. Banda city is administrated by the Banda Municipal Corporation which belongs to Banda Metropolitan Region. The city falls under Chitrakoot administrative division of Uttar Pradesh state administration. The city is also one of the five sub districts or Tehsils of its district apart from Naraini, Baberu, Atarra and Pailani.

The Banda Municipal Corporation forms the local governing body of the city which is headed by the Municipal commissioner who is one of the elected ward member of the city. The current Municipal commissioner of the city is Smt. Vinod Jain. The Municipal commissioner is assisted by an Assistant Municipal Commissioner.  

Banda city is governed by the district magistrate who is solely responsible for law and administration in Banda district. The district magistrate – DM is responsible for several vital duties like maintaining law 7 order, revenue collection, making government orders & laws functional in the city, supervising election duties and many more. The current DM of the district is Shri Suresh Kumar.
