Banda is the district Headquarters of Banda district in Uttar Pradesh located in the Bundelkhand region. The city lies on the right banks of River Ken. The city is sited at a distance of 197 km away from the state capital Lucknow and 575 km away from the national capital Delhi. People of all religions and communities reside in Banda out of which the majority of population belongs to Chandelas, Bundelas, Chandrauls, Patels and Kshatriyas communities. The locals in the city speak Hindi, Urdu and Bundeli. The language Bundeli is a common language used among the people in Bundelkhand region which is 70 to 90 % similar to Hindi language.The Banda royal family is very popular in Uttar Pradesh as they are one of the highest jagirdars in their period. The current heir of the Banda royal family is Smt. Amita Bajpai. Goswami Tulsidas is one of the popular personalities born in Banda. He authored the Ramcharitmanas.
History of Banda
Banda is a historic and an ancient town in Uttar Pradesh which was ruled by different rulers in different time slots like the Chedi kingdom before 16th century, Chandel Rajputs after 16th Century and finally by the British East India Company in 1802. During the time of British the city was under Allahabad division and was a military cantonment town. The residents of the city faced rough patches during British rule due to heavy tax and many joined Indian rebellion to protect against British rule in their region. River Ken flows very close to the western boundary of the city. The city also homes numerous small water bodies and ponds in its various localities like Chhabi Talab, Diggi Talab, Nawab Tank and many more. The city has uneven highlands in its ground surface. Banda city is administrated by the Banda Municipal Corporation which belongs to Banda Metropolitan Region. The city falls under Chitrakoot administrative division of Uttar Pradesh state administration. The city is also one of the five sub districts or Tehsils of its district apart from Naraini, Baberu, Atarra and Pailani.The Banda Municipal Corporation forms the local governing body of the city which is headed by the Municipal commissioner who is one of the elected ward member of the city. The current Municipal commissioner of the city is Smt. Vinod Jain. The Municipal commissioner is assisted by an Assistant Municipal Commissioner.
Banda city is governed by the district magistrate who is solely responsible for law and administration in Banda district. The district magistrate – DM is responsible for several vital duties like maintaining law 7 order, revenue collection, making government orders & laws functional in the city, supervising election duties and many more. The current DM of the district is Shri Suresh Kumar.
